What makes it iconic

  • Built directly across 35th Street from the original Comiskey Park (1910–1990), the longtime White Sox home.
  • Iconic exploding scoreboard — a tradition continued from Bill Veeck's original Comiskey, with pinwheels and fireworks after every White Sox home run.
  • Heavily renovated in 2001–2004 to add lower upper-deck seating, removing the originally steep upper bowl.
  • Renamed multiple times: New Comiskey Park (1991), U.S. Cellular Field (2003), Guaranteed Rate Field (2016), Rate Field (2024).

Notable moments

  • The 2005 World Series sweep of Houston — the White Sox's first championship since 1917.
  • Mark Buehrle's perfect game on July 23, 2009 — saved by a leaping Dewayne Wise catch in center.
  • Frank Thomas's two MVP seasons (1993, 1994), the latter cut short by the strike.
  • Hosting the 1983 All-Star Game (at the original Comiskey, but the franchise heritage carries).

Timeline

  1. 1991

    New Comiskey Park opens

The White Sox moved across the street from the demolished original Comiskey. The new park's steep upper deck was an early criticism — fixed later in renovations.

  2. 2005

    World Series title

The White Sox swept Houston for their first World Series title in 88 years. They went 11-1 in the postseason behind a dominant rotation.

  3. 2009

    Buehrle's perfect game

Mark Buehrle threw the 18th perfect game in MLB history, with help from Dewayne Wise's astonishing leap to rob a home run in the ninth.

  4. 2016

    Renamed Guaranteed Rate Field

Naming rights passed to mortgage company Guaranteed Rate. Fans dubbed it 'The Rate' or worse.

  5. 2024

    Rate Field rebrand

The company simplified its name and the park followed.
