Ocean air and deep gaps long made it a pitcher's park; walls were brought in slightly in 2013 and 2021.

What makes it iconic

  • Western Metal Supply Co. building — a 1909 brick warehouse incorporated into left field. Its corner forms the foul pole.
  • Park at the Park — a grassy hill beyond center field where fans (and dogs) watch from outside the stadium.
  • Ocean-influenced architecture: white sandstone walls, sandy stucco, and palm trees throughout.
  • Helped catalyze the redevelopment of San Diego's East Village into the Gaslamp Quarter neighborhood.

Notable moments

  • Hosting the 2016 All-Star Game, with Eric Hosmer's MVP performance.
  • Tony Gwynn's statue dedication in 2007 — though Gwynn played his entire career at Jack Murphy / Qualcomm Stadium.
  • Fernando Tatís Jr.'s 2020 grand slam on a 3-0 count — controversial and vintage in equal measure.
  • The 2022 NLDS upset of the 111-win Dodgers in four games.

Timeline

    Petco Park opens

The Padres moved out of Qualcomm Stadium into a downtown park integrated with the historic Western Metal Supply Co. building.

  2. 2006

    First October at Petco

The Padres reached the NLDS in just the park's third year. They were swept by St. Louis.

  3. 2016

    All-Star Game

Petco hosted the All-Star Game; Eric Hosmer was MVP. The next decade would bring a wave of investment in the Padres' roster.

  4. 2020

    Tatís Jr. era arrives

Fernando Tatís Jr. signed a 14-year, $340M extension — the longest in MLB history at the time. The 'Slam Diego' summer of grand slams followed.

  5. 2022

    Beating the Dodgers

The Padres knocked out a 111-win Dodgers team in the NLDS — one of the great upsets of the wild-card era. They lost to Philadelphia in the NLCS.
