What makes it iconic

  • First major North American sports venue to be LEED-certified, with a green roof and water-conserving systems.
  • Center-field 'Cherry Blossom' tribute and the 'Racing Presidents' between innings (Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Taft).
  • Catalyzed the redevelopment of the Navy Yard / Capitol Riverfront neighborhood from industrial to residential.
  • Replaced RFK Stadium, the Nationals' temporary home for their first three seasons (2005–07) after relocating from Montreal.

Notable moments

  • Howie Kendrick's grand slam in Game 5 of the 2019 NLDS — sending the Nats to the NLCS for the first time.
  • The 2019 World Series run — every road team won; Washington went 4-0 in Houston.
  • Stephen Strasburg's MLB debut on June 8, 2010 — 14 strikeouts in seven innings, in the most-hyped debut in years.
  • Bryce Harper's MVP 2015 season at age 22.

Timeline

  2. 2010

    Strasburg debut

Stephen Strasburg debuted with 14 strikeouts against the Pirates. He'd undergo Tommy John surgery later that year, but returned to anchor a championship rotation.

  3. 2012

    First playoff appearance since 1933

The Nationals — successors to the franchise that became the Twins in 1961 — reached the postseason for the first time in 79 years. They lost a heartbreaker to St. Louis in Game 5.

  4. 2019

    World Series title

Washington beat Houston in seven games, with all four wins coming on the road. It was the franchise's first championship — including the Montreal years.
