Largest seating capacity in MLB. The symmetrical dimensions are nearly unchanged since 1962.

What makes it iconic

  • Built into Chavez Ravine — the controversial displacement of the Mexican-American communities of La Loma, Palo Verde, and Bishop preceded construction.
  • Pastel-colored seating tiers — gold, light blue, dark blue, orange — give the bowl its instantly recognizable look.
  • Wave-shaped roof line over the upper concourse, an iconic mid-century design element.
  • Third-oldest active MLB park, after Fenway and Wrigley.

Notable moments

  • Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965 — striking out 14 Cubs.
  • Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit, walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, off Dennis Eckersley.
  • Fernando Valenzuela's rookie 'Fernandomania' season in 1981, going 8-0 with five shutouts to start the year.
  • Clayton Kershaw's no-hitter on June 18, 2014 — striking out 15.

Timeline

  1. 1962

    Stadium opens

The Dodgers opened the park on April 10, 1962, after four years playing in the LA Coliseum following the move from Brooklyn. Walter O'Malley spent $23 million — entirely privately financed.

  2. 1965

    Koufax's perfect game

Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against the Cubs — his fourth no-hitter in four straight years. Vin Scully's call of the ninth inning is one of baseball's great audio recordings.

  3. 1981

    Fernandomania

Rookie Fernando Valenzuela energized LA's Mexican-American community on his way to winning Cy Young and Rookie of the Year. The Dodgers won the World Series.

  4. 1988

    Gibson limps off the bench

Kirk Gibson — barely able to walk — pinch-hit a walk-off home run in Game 1 of the World Series. The Dodgers stunned the heavily-favored A's in five games.

  5. 2020

    Title in the bubble year

The Dodgers won their first World Series since 1988, beating Tampa Bay in the Texas neutral-site bubble. The on-field celebration happened in Arlington, but the parade never came.

  6. 2024

    Ohtani-Betts era championship

Shohei Ohtani's first season in LA ended with a World Series title over the Yankees in five games — the celebration finally happening at Dodger Stadium.
