What makes it iconic

  • Fan-shaped retractable roof — opens like an Asian fan rather than sliding sideways. The only one of its kind in MLB.
  • Bernie Brewer's slide — a yellow slide in the outfield that the team mascot rides into a giant beer mug after every Brewers home run.
  • Replaced County Stadium (1953–2000) on the same campus.
  • Originally Miller Park; renamed American Family Field in 2021.

Notable moments

  • The 2011 NLCS run, ending in six games against the Cardinals — Milwaukee's deepest playoff run since 1982.
  • Christian Yelich's 2018 NL MVP and near-Triple Crown season.
  • Hosting the 2002 All-Star Game — which famously ended in a 7-7 tie after both teams ran out of pitchers.
  • Ryan Braun's 2011 NL MVP (later tarnished by PED suspension).

Timeline

  1. 2001

    Miller Park opens

The Brewers moved into a retractable-roof park funded in part by a controversial Wisconsin sales tax. Construction tragically claimed three workers in a 1999 crane collapse.

  2. 2002

    All-Star tie

Milwaukee hosted the All-Star Game. With both teams out of pitchers in the 11th, Commissioner Bud Selig declared a 7-7 tie — leading to the rule change that gave the All-Star Game World Series home-field advantage.

  3. 2011

    Deep October run

The Brewers reached the NLCS for the first time. Ryan Braun won NL MVP; Prince Fielder slugged through October before signing with Detroit in free agency.

  4. 2018

    Yelich's MVP year

Christian Yelich won NL MVP and led the Brewers to within one game of the World Series — losing the NLCS to the Dodgers in seven.

  5. 2021

    Renamed American Family Field

Miller's naming rights expired; American Family Insurance took over.
